What to Expect During Your First Eye Exam
Preparing for Your Eye Exam:
During Your Eye Exam:
- Be able to briefly and clearly describe any eye symptoms you are having
- Before you arrive, list all questions you may have for the physician
- Bring glasses/contact lenses and sunglasses for the trip home
- Have an updated list of current medications
During Your Eye Exam:
- You will be asked about your current eye health, previous medical and vision history
- If you are wearing contact lenses, you will be asked to remove them before the exam
- Several tests (vision check, eye pressure, etc.) will be performed to check the health of your eyes
- Your pupils will be dilated with eyedrops to allow your doctor to evaluate the back of your eye, including your retina, optic disc and the underlying layer of blood vessels that nourish the retina (choroid)
- The effects of the dilating drops will last for several hours and your vision will likely be blurry, especially with near objects
- If you are uncomfortable driving with dilated pupils, be sure to make arrangements for transportation after your exam
- Depending on your age, medical history and risk of developing eye disease, you may need more specialized tests
- At the end of your eye exam, your doctor will discuss the results of all testing and the measures you can take to protect your vision
